The classic startx is a huge pain to get working. I eventually gave up and used SDDM to get X11 rolling. Put alias startx="sudo systemctl start sddm" in your bashrc (and a matching passwordless exception in sudoers) with SDDM configured for automatic login to continue feeling leet for booting to console.
